Tennis News from Around the World!
“This Week’s Drop Shots” details the latest results, hot takes, and breaking news from around the tennis world in a quick and easy-to-read format.
Another exciting week in the tennis world! After almost all the focus was on the Aussie Open, we’ve gotten to spread back out across the globe and follow tennis on different continents, surfaces, and on both the ATP and WTA tours. Here’s what you need to know!
ATP Updates
On the men’s side, two events to follow are in Rotterdam and Buenos Aires, on indoor hard and clay respectively. In Rotterdam, big names have fallen in upsets already. Zverev was taken out by Bublik in straight sets, as was Medvedev by Lajovic. Goffin has backed up his impressive form from last week with a convincing win over Struff.
In Buenos Aires, the top seeds are Schwartzman and Garin, but dangerous players such as Munar, F. Cerundolo, and Koepfer are lurking in the draw. Today’s matches will set up half of the quarters!
WTA Updates
For the women, most of the focus is on the tournament in Doha. This draw is loaded with talent: Svitolina, Azarenka, Sabalenka, Muguruza, Sakkari, Pliskova…the list goes on and on. American qualifier Pegula has picked up right where she left off in Australia by taking out Wang and Ostapenko in straight sets. She has a legitimate chance to make a run in the bottom half of the draw, especially with it being more open than the incredible top half.
We’re fortunate to be able to talk to the players in Doha this week! Click here to hear Gruskin talk with the WTA stars competing there. He’ll also be talking with WTA players competing in Lyon, where the #1 seed Alexandrova was upset in the first round!
