This Week's Tennis News
“This Week’s Drop Shots” details the latest results, hot takes, and breaking news from around the tennis world in a quick and easy-to-read format.
It’s another exciting week in the tennis world! A first-time Masters 1000 champion, NextGen players making runs, upcoming college rivalry matchups…it’s a good time to be a tennis fan.
What Happened in Miami?
We’ve had a few days to break down the action in Miami…and let’s just say there’s a lot to talk about! On the women’s side, it was great to see players such as Andreescu and Barty return to such a high level of tennis! There were plenty of questions surrounding both of them in 2020 and early this year, but results like these remind us of the talent and level they can achieve. The tournament also saw great runs from players including Svitolina, Sakkari, and Sabalenka. The list of seriously dangerous players on the WTA seems to be infinitely long, with so many young players breaking through and proving that they can win matches on the sport’s biggest stages.
On the men’s side, we knew the door would be wide open for younger players from the start, as many of the top men decided to not play the event in Miami. Seeing the success of young players such as Sinner, Rublev, Korda, and of course Hurkacz, was a delight at this level of tournament. He may not have beaten a member of the Big 3 to get this title, but Hurkacz took down Shapovalov, Raonic, Tsitsipas, Rublev, and Sinner to bring home the trophy. No matter what, you can’t say that’s not impressive…
