College Contenders Continues
Over the next few weeks, our Cracked Racquets team will lay out the case for each of our preseason Top 10 Men’s and Women’s contenders to capture the 2022 NCAA Team Championship.
This week, we saw the #8 teams revealed.
#8 Duke University [Women]
The ACC was the strongest conference in women’s tennis last year; 6 ACC teams finished in the year-end top 10! Nothing better reflects the strength of the ACC last year than Duke’s season. The Blue Devils suffered their worst ACC conference record (9-4) since 2013 yet made the NCAA quarterfinals, knocking off two top 10 teams in Baylor (R32) and UCF (R16) at home to do so.
They’ll carry that momentum and experience from May into the 2022 season, as they return five of their six singles starters and bring in the Tennis Recruiting Network’s #3 recruiting class. Those freshmen have big shoes to fill — the lone departure from Duke’s singles lineup was Meibile Chi. Chi was Duke’s winningest player last season going 21-3 in duals and 15-2 at #4 position.

#8 Texas Christian University [Men]
The TCU Horned Frogs, led by Head Coach David Roditi have long been considered one of the elite college tennis programs in the country. That should not change at all in 2022, as the Frogs appear to be set up quite nicely for another deep postseason run.
The 2021 NCAA quarterfinalists will have a little bit of a different look and feel this year, and Frog fans will surely miss guys like Alastair Gray, Bertus Kruger, Teddy Paroulek, and Juan Martin who have all moved on for various reasons. A couple of highly accomplished grad transfers, plus the addition of some younger newcomers will allow TCU to remain right in the thick of things in the Big 12 conference, and also on a national scale though. On paper, the Frogs have a perfect blend of experienced players and also some talented youth. The Big 12 is extremely competitive each year, but the men from Fort Worth have as good of a chance as anyone to sit at the top in the end.
