Weekly Tennis News - July 9th
“This Week’s Drop Shots” details the latest results, hot takes, and breaking news from around the tennis world in a quick and easy-to-read format.
Hello tennis fans! We’re back to keep you updated on the world of tennis, which right now means a lot of Wimbledon coverage!
Wimbledon - Gentlemen
The final (Sunday) is set on the men’s side, with veteran Novak Djokovic taking on Matteo Berrettini for the title. Berrettini took down surprise semifinalist Hurkacz to reach the final, while Djokovic defeated young Canadian Shapovalov in 3 tight sets to earn another chance at the Wimbledon crown. Djokovic will of course enter this match a heavy favorite in his 30th major final, but Berrettini poses a threat with his power on the serve and forehand wing. Although Hurkacz and Shapovalov lost, they both have to be pleased with their runs this tournament. Hurkacz pulled off major upsets against both Medvedev and Federer, while Shapovalov took down Murray, Bautista Agut, and Khachanov in his last 3 matches.
Wimbledon - Ladies
The final (tomorrow morning!) between Ash Barty and Karolina Pliskova is an entertaining clash in styles between the variety/creativity of Barty and pure power of Pliskova. Barty took down former champion Kerber in the semis while Pliskova out-slugged Sabalenka to earn her bid to the final. Barty is favored to win the match (-245) but Pliskova (+200) has played an incredible Wimbledon and has great momentum coming through a tough match versus Sabalenka. Both players have only dropped one set coming into the final…so the finalists are in great form!
