Weekly Tennis News - June 17th
“This Week’s Drop Shots” details the latest results, hot takes, and breaking news from around the tennis world in a quick and easy-to-read format.
Hey tennis fans - welcome to this week’s newsletter updating you on all things tennis! After the drama at Roland Garros, we’ve switched to the vastly different grass surface in preparation for Wimbledon. Here’s what you need to know:
ATP Updates
Djokovic will enter Wimbledon a heavy favorite, given his recent form, Nadal’s withdrawal from the tournament, Federer’s flat performance on grass thus far, and several other factors. The lead-up tournaments played on grass provide us with a bit of insight on other potential contenders. It’s clear that the transition between surfaces isn’t easy, and big names such as Medvedev (upset by Struff) have struggled. Players such as Berrettini have handled the change well, showing us this with a straightforward win over Murray this morning. In both Halle and London, big names are in action tomorrow: Rublev, Berrettini, Cilic, FAA, and more look to gain confidence on the grass!
WTA Updates
After an unseeded player (Krejcikova) took the French Open, we’re reminded that these tournaments are truly anyone’s to win. Earlier today, Azarenka, Pegula, and Muguruza all won to advance in Berlin. No. 1 seeded Sabalenka was upset early by American Madison Keys, who squares off against Samsonova for a spot in the quarters. As we look ahead to Wimbledon, there are of course still many questions around players such as Osaka. Today, she just announced that she would not be playing the tournament, making way for other leading contenders such as Barty, Serena, and Kvitova!
